Translation of relics of John the Baptist

Translation of relics of John the Baptist

In summer 2006 the translation of the hand of John the Prophet, Forerunner and Baptist was organized from the Cetinje Monastery of the Nativity of the Holy Mother in Montenegro to the Russian Orthodox Church.

Following the extensive experience of the Foundation of St. Andrew the First-Called in organization of international programmes on translation of great Christian relics to Russia and CIS countries, the Serbian Orthodox Church, after two years of negotiations, made a decision to provide the Hand of John the Baptist for limited period of time on the security of the Foundation of St. Andrew the First-Called.

Within 40 days over two million believers came to worship the Hand of the Prophet in Moscow, Nizhny Novgorod, Cheboksary, Yekaterinburg, Chelyabinsk, Saratov, Stavropol and Mineralnye Vody, Rostov-on-Don, Minsk, Saint-Petersburg, Gatchina, Kiev, Zaporozhye, Samara and Tolyatti. The pilgrims who came to worship the relic were not only Christians but also Catholics and Muslims.
