Medical expeditions to Kuril Islands

Medical expeditions to Kuril Islands

In 2005 the Centre of National Glory and the Foundation of St. Andrew the First-Called initiated cooperation with the Sakhalin region when the Funds’ delegation, headed by Vladimir Yakunin and Oleg Atkov, for the first time took part in the 60th anniversary celebrations dedicated to the end of the World War Two. Then, on the Iturup Island, the monument to  All-Praised Saint Andrew the First-Called was erected.

In 2007 the Centre of National Glory and the Foundation of St. Andrew the First-Called together with «Hydrostroy» company, with personal involvement of the company’s founder and the winner of the International Prize of the Foundation of St. Andrew the First-Called A. G. Verkhovsky , and with support from Governor of the Sakhalin region, began the implementation of the charity project of the medical and educational expedition on the eastern borders of Russia. Every year doctors from large medical centres of Russia come to Sakhalin and Kuril Islands.

People who live in remote island areas, far from the federal centre, have a chance to get help from leading Russian doctors despite difficulties with transport availability.

In recent years the expedition visits the islands twice a year — in spring and in autumn. Thousands of people come to see the doctors during every expedition. There were several occasions when the doctors’ arrival literally saved people’s lives. Annually the delegation of the Foundation of St. Andrew the First-Called and the Centre of National Glory deliver the Holy Fire from Jerusalem to  Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk  — it is the great relic for the whole Orthodox world.

The cultural and educational programme of the expedition includes concerts and exhibitions, film presentations and meetings with Russian actors. The events gather a lot of people and always give the best impressions and positive emotions for the local people.
