Restoration of the Convent of Martha and Mary

Restoration of the Convent of Martha and Mary

Since 2004 the most important element of activity of the Foundation of St. Andrew the First-Called has been the programme of restoration of the Convent of Martha and Mary. The Convent was working in the beginning of XX century as the centre of mercy and charity and provided support for orphans, ill people and people in need.

Since 2004 the most important element of activity of the Foundation of St. Andrew the First-Called has been the programme of restoration of the Convent of Martha and Mary. The Convent was working in the beginning of XX century as the centre of mercy and charity and provided support for orphans, ill people and people in need.

Its restoration has become a symbol of our society calling for charity traditions. Thus, the restoration of Cathedral of Christ the Saviour was the symbol of revival of the Orthodoxy in the lives of Russian people.

The Foundation of St. Andrew the First-Called initiated the creation and further monitoring of activity of the Board of Trustees of the programme “Restoration of the Charity Convent of Martha and Mary. For 100th anniversary of its foundation”. Representatives of state and municipal authorities, public figures and Russian business were invited to take part in the programme.

Members of the Board of Trustees and the executive group as well as employees of several contractors took active part in restoration of the centre of mercy. The Board of Trustees of the programme was headed by His Holiness Patriarch Alexis II of Moscow and All Russia. Since February 2009 His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia has been in charge of the programme.

In September 2008 the Convent of Martha and Mary was opened after the restoration and on September 7, 2009 the festivities dedicated to 100th anniversary of its foundation were held.
