The photo exhibition “South Ossetia: cultural catastrophe”

On August 28–29 2008 the delegation of the Public Chamber of the Russian Federation, with member of the Public Chamber, Vice-President of the Centre of National Glory Zalina Medoyeva in charge, visited Tskhinvali. The main goal of the visit was to monitor the condition of cultural and historical monuments which had been damaged during military actions.

Photographs that had been made during the visit were used for photo exhibition "South Ossetia: cultural catastrophe". The presentation of the exhibition was included in the programme of the VI session of the International public forum "Dialogue of Civilizations" that was held on Rhodes island (Greece). In December the presentation of the exhibition was organized in the European parliament as part of the European Russian Forum "European Union and Russia: new challenges" on December 7–9 2008. The photographs which had been made by employees of the Centre of National Glory, ITAR-TASS Information Agency and witnesses showed destroyed houses, schools, historical and cultural monuments. They are the evidence of hardships the peaceful population had to endure due to actions of the Georgian army. The exhibition was organized in order to draw attention of the public and international organizations to the events of August 2008 in South Ossetia, to help overcome the information vacuum around the tragedy and give the objective assessment of what had happened.
